Boerne Construction Update

8:29am April 10, 2017

Boerne construction is now 40 percent complete. We will begin turning up subscribers in late April! Thank you for your continued patience and excitement.

What's in a Number?

11:11am April 4, 2017

For those of you who want to know how zones were created and how we calculate the percentage to goal, this update is for you!

The zones are not based off of zip codes, but rather population density in relation to the existing BEC electric poles and infrastructure. The goal for a particular zone is 50 percent of active residential and commercial meters. This excludes meters for gates, barns, wells, etc. The following graph depicts actual backers for each zone, the goal for that zone and the calculated percentage.

The pilot project is 20-percent complete!

10:50am March 20, 2017

Contractors will begin installing backbone fiber this week. (Backbone is a larger transmission line that carries data gathered from smaller lines that interconnect with it.) Member installations are expected to begin in late April.

Construction in Progress!

1:09pm March 1, 2017

Construction in Progress

BEC Fiber reached a major milestone when construction began in Boerne on February 23, 2017. Like much of our service territory, this area is currently without any high-speed internet options. However, these members took matters into their own hands, banded together and pushed the initiative in North Boerne.

Will your community be next?

2:38pm February 27, 2017

To help raise awareness we wanted to let you know how you can help. We appreciate our members support, patience and questions while we work to launch BEC Fiber service.

  • Login to your joinbec.banderaelectric.com and send postcards to all those in your area for FREE, we cover everything!
  • Let others in your area know that all homes and businesses can preregister NOW. They do not have to wait until a goal is set. Interest levels from preregistration will guide our construction process. Your community could be next when enough people preregister.
  • Follow us on Facebook, like and share all of our posts.
  • Let us know what questions you have or have heard in the community by posting comments on our BEC Fiber comment page or give us a call at 866.226.3372.

Why Boerne? Don't they already have high-speed internet?

8:52pm February 1, 2017

Many have asked why BEC's first fiber pilot is being built and tested in North Boerne.  This is an interesting story. There is an area north of Boerne, on the way to Sisterdale that is in a "dead zone" for any type of high-speed internet. The people who live in this area are BEC members, and have satellite internet and cell phone data as their only internet options -- not unlike many other BEC neighborhoods.  A year ago, BEC was not aware of the internet issues in this area. However, one frustrated BEC member and his neighbors took it upon themselves to "rally the troops" to bring high-speed internet to their homes.

It all started with a free online petition and neighborhood website, door to door canvasing by volunteers and many emails to BEC.  This neighborhood's grass roots efforts caught our attention.  BEC called a town hall meeting last summer and the room was packed with these neighbors asking that we listen to their needs and help them to bridge the "digital divide," improving their quality of life.

We asked them to get 50% of their neighborhood, and the surrounding neighborhood to sign up, and we promised take the proposal to the BEC board of directors for consideration of a pilot project.  This group of grassroots advocates did just that. Within weeks, the Boerne pilot was approved and the BEC Fiber (formerly BEC Broadband) staff hit the ground running!

Since then, the interest from other neighborhoods in the BEC service territory has grown exponentially, and BEC introduced this site to help members manage the interest.  Just as we did 78 years ago when BEC brought electricity to the area, we are working to bring you high-speed internet.  But, just like 78 years ago, it takes time to develop and build the infrastructure.  We see the interest keeps growing and we need our member-owners to help us keep the momentum going forward.

This is where you come in. Please, attend the town hall meetings, come to the Annual Meeting (Sat, May 20), sign up on this site, talk to your friends and neighbors and please help to spread the word! This is your cooperative and we are here to provide you reliable service and improve your quality of life the best we can.

We have a new look and the fiber is here!

4:06pm January 30, 2017

BEC Broadband has changed our name to BEC Fiber and our logo to better reflect our "fiber to the home" initiative.

And guess what else?

The fiber has arrived!

Construction in North Boerne is about to begin.  like much of our rural service territory, this area is currently without any high-speed internet options. However, these members took matters into their own hands, banded together, got the required signatures and pushed the initiative in North Boerne.

We are happy to be able to bring high-speed internet to our members in this area.

BEC Fiber Town Hall Meetings

2:03pm January 30, 2017

We are ramping up our project and are seeing a significant number of sign ups across our territory!  Keep up the good work.  BEC Fiber will be holding town hall meetings in Bandera, Boerne and Lakehills this month. We encourage you to attend all or one of the meetings to ask your questions and learn about our project and the future of BEC Fiber.

Keep Signing Up!

3:45pm January 23, 2017

Our broadband pilot is well on the way in Boerne.  Pipe Creek and Lakehills are quickly following behind. Please encourage all of your friends and neighbors to sign up to get your zone up to 50 percent. At that point, we can present our new broadband plan to the board of directors.

Not in an active zone?  Never fear, we are adding new zones soon.  Feel free to sign up now, and the zones will capture your information if you fit into it.

Thank you for supporting this grassroots movement of our member-owners.  Please continue to monitor this page for updates!

Things are moving along in Boerne pilot area!

3:42pm January 23, 2017

BEC is completing the planning stage of our pilot at this time. You may receive a call, letter, or visit from a BEC contractor regarding access to an easement on your property. Should you have any questions regarding this, please call 866-226-3372.

With completion of phase 1, we expect to begin construction in Boerne in mid to late February, with home installation following completion of our network construction.

At this time, we are still finalizing all plans.  There have been no BEC broadband internet home installations yet, but we will contact you when we are ready to install. If you sent in paperwork from a town hall meeting or have signed up on CrowdFiber, we have your information and will contact you as soon as it is available in your neighborhood.

Please, continue to monitor our progress on this page.

Bandera Wireless Pilot Update

8:50am December 9, 2016

BEC has decided to discontinue the pilot program. It is always BEC’s primary mission to provide value added services to our members at a reasonable cost and through responsible business practices. During the design and construction of the pilot wireless network, the equipment did not perform as we had hoped, nor was it readily available.

Instead, we have decided to continue with a “fiber to the home” broadband project. We are asking that all members interested in broadband fiber internet sign up here on CrowdFiber. If you were a member on the Bandera wireless pilot, your name has already been added to CrowdFiber. However, it is recommended that you create an account as this is the best place to get updates on the project. As a zone reaches 50 percent member interest, BEC will begin planning and design.

BEC Free Wi-Fi will still be available in Bandera on Main Street and at the Mansfield and Bandera City parks for public use.  Thank you for your continued patience.

Boerne Broadband Update

10:02am December 1, 2016

The Boerne broadband project is slated to begin construction in late January 2017.  We will keep you updated through email and social media as we have more information about the project. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us at PublicRelations@banderaelectric.com.

PostCards are Now Live!

10:26am November 3, 2016

Did you know that you can now send postcards to your neighbors who have not yet signed up for broadband?  Login to your account, and you will see the option to send up to two post cards per month to your neighbors. Your hard work will keep this movement growing!

Hello! Welcome to BEC Broadband.

10:12am October 10, 2016

Thank you for joining us as we endeavor to bring Broadband to our BEC members in the Texas Hill Country.  As we begin to bridge the digital divide, implement and test pilot programs, and design and grow our service, we will be posting updates here, at joinbec.banderaelectric.com.  Please, continue to follow this site, share on your social media and encourage your friends and neighbors to sign up.

You are all member-owners of BEC and this broadband initiative is in response to your, and your neighbors', efforts to improve your communities.

Thank you,
Bandera Electric Cooperative

Thanks, Allen. I have added the payment information to our web site. I am anxious to get the service here. My AT&T DSL goes down every afternoon when the temperature gets over about 85 degrees (like it will today), and AT&T can not find the problem. Our street (Oak Hills Drive in Flying-L) is complete with the main fiber running out to Bottle Springs Road but not connected to the fiber at the road. Is there an estimate of when that line will be hot?

@John Goode - Our admin has changed the comments section to needing approval for comments before they show up. Our reliability has been great! We have not had any equipment issues and only a few fiber splicing issues, more than likely from a battery powered splicer that was not calibrated correctly. The fiber service will be added to your electric bill and called out separately before showing the total bill of electric and fiber together.

What has been the reliability of the BEC fiber internet connection after it is first turned on? They are connecting customers here in the Flying-L now, and I was wondering how long I should keep my existing AT&T internet as a backup after I am connected to fiber.

Harold, We are getting close. I actually have a fiber connection box on my house and there is some fiber run on our street, but there are gaps and no fiber run to the outside world. Hopefully the crews will return soon and finish the job. A lot of the fiber at the Flying-L has to be run underground which slows them down. They had to put in about 100 feet of conduit to bring it to my "island" street (surrounded by fairways). My AT&T DSL is failing fast - drops connection up to 20 times a day!

Harold Schmidt - They are still running fiber in the ranch, but nothing hooked up yet. I live on a street surrounded by the golf course (no overhead services), and this week they finished installing the underground conduit for the fiber to our street. Allen - it would seem to be much easier for BEC and also us as Stakeholders to have a complete signup page on your website. This should also include the ability to pay for the installation plus services. Being part of the Medina Lake area (which comprises the largest number of users); I am certain that my neighbors do not want to drive to Bandera if this can be done online! We would like to have 1" conduit from the pole to the house if people are placing it. Also make sure to use the "sweeping" 90 degree bends, not water pipe 90s. We are counting on getting 1 mile of cable placed per day from here on out, so Daniel is correct in saying get your applications in sooner rather than later when we are in your area. We are having to go back to more than 50 locations in Boerne where the applications came in after the contractor's deadline. We have a new contractor working now and the progress is picking up. We are going over the plans for Pipe Creek as we speak and hope to start over there soon. Thanks to everyone for your patience and support!

Thanks They are are Flying L Subdivision Now . It is in the red still like us. I don't know where they will go next. We are 8 miles from there . The crew told me they had 3200 mile to do and BEC was hiring two more crews to get going. I see Pipe Creek is at 59% now.. Any one from Pipe Creek have Fiber??? We don't Have any wire out here at all. I see they run a line just above the phone line then tie fiber to that we are a long way from there . I hope this year but not counting on it. I will start putting money aside to help pay for this. i might start burying conduit for to run. I see no 90. i only need 2 corners from pole to house. What size conduit did you need. I know its the grey electrical.

Bandera Electric Broadband Pilot - Daniel Shelton

2:57pm August 22, 2017

Daniel Shelton

Harold : I am on the west edge of the Boerne pilot area. You will know they are close when you see them hooking fiber from the power poles to a box on the side of the house. I would pay the installation fee as soon as possible. I talked to the contractors doing the fiber to the side of the house and they like to do a bunch in one area at a time since it saves time. I also thought I heard- and please correct me Allen if I am wrong - BEC can run about 2 miles of fiber a day on the street poles, so once they are in the area it happens pretty quick. They seem to do the installation in three sections (along the street poles, from street pole to side of house, outside of house to inside). In my case, the fiber from the street pole to the side of the house was done first.

Got installed yesterday. Had a 14:15 appointment and the installers got there at 14:16 - they drove by the drive way and had to back up so that cost them the minute. Installation was a bit more of a pain than I hoped. I had installed flexible conduit with a pull string in the attic to run the fiber in. There were too many turns in the conduit and this caused a lot of friction so we had to bypass the conduit for about half the run - even wire pull lube did not help. I signed up for 50Mbps and am getting the following (latency: 18ms, download: 52.35Mbps, upload: 50.46Mbps). Talking to the installers who are BEC contractors, they said that they have done over 200 installs.

Bandera Electric Broadband Pilot - Jonathan Copeland

9:50pm August 19, 2017

When you get it installed you will love it. I had cancelled my GVTC internet and only had the cable TV and it "lowered" my bill from 146. A mont to 143. A month due to "bundling". I was understandably irritated and just had setup Dish Network and cut my bill down to 71 a month. Be aware that the BEC will bill your first month plus the next month on your first bill. So the first one is a doozy. Overall I am back to about the same cost as before I had the BEC fiber but at much higher speeds. They have remained consistent in the 100 up/100 down speed range give or take one or two mbs. If BEC would ever provide local channels I might be able to cancel all cable services and just go with internet services like Amazon.

@Matthew Pica - We decided to only lease the modem because if the customer bought it and then it had an issue, the customer would not be able to deal back with Calix, our provider, because they only deal with telecom companies. With the lease we could just come and replace the modem if there was ever a problem and then deal back with Calix for warranty work. We feel this will keep things much simpler in the end. Thanks!

@Lenny Walden - The phone service will include unlimited calling, local or long distance, and we will most likely be able to keep your existing phone number if you want. The list of features for the phone service is amazing. I can't think of a feature that I have ever used that is not on the list, we will publish that list sometime in the near future. The maintenance plan covers any damage that might happen to your fiber optic cable inside your home, such as: cats, dogs, vacuum, whatever. It also would cover if we had to send a tech out to your house for a wireless problem that can't be solved through our help line. A static IP is usually only used in a business situation, or when a person does not want their IP address to change for a certain reason: security link, gaming, FTP server, etc. We finally have a person semi-dedicated to our webpage and Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/BECFiber/ ) so we hope to add information soon.

Bandera Electric Broadband Pilot - Jonathan Copeland

@Ryan Martin Yes the BEC device (Calix GigaCenter/GigaPoint) is needed to pair back to BEC distribution points. I have the same equipment. Make sure they know you need the GigaPoint which simply provides an Ethernet handoff from the Fiber optical network of BEC. Then you can plug straight into your UniFi USG. The device is tiny and needs a 110 outlet nearby to power it. It is also an inside device and not weather proof. I have mine in my garage with copper running in my attic to my UniFi USG and then I branch out internally via copper and WiFi. Hope that helps. @Allen Marshal @Johnathon Copeland: I live on the north side of HW 16 in Pipe Creek (near Wat Sangabucha). Just so I'm clear on how the fiber will be run, it will enter my my property via the same poles as my power and terminate near my electric meter, correct? If that is the case, I'm a happy camper as my ATT Uverse service is currently connected on that pole which is right outside my office. I have a Ubiquiti Unifi USG router/firewall as my edge device. With that in mind, is the BEC a mandatory device? Is the GPON essentially a media converter? Is it needed if my router have SPF WAN ports for fiber uplink? Thanks!

Thanks Allen. That is what I would have used (electrical conduit elbows are sweeping). Not sure what will be done at the house, but installation folks can help with that. I have a completed installation here on the West side of IH10 in the Ranger Creek subdivision. From what I was told I was installation #3. I run my own speed tests and I was getting 21.4Mbs Down and 3.4Mbs up with 88msec latency on GVTC immediately before switching over to BEC Fiber. After letting things sync up the same test was run at 101.5Mbs down and 102.8Mbs up with 50msec latency. I think the hardest part for the team was that even though I had jetline run from outside to inside it was not in a conduit and had at least 1 sharp 90 degree turn and it took them a bit to get past that bend in the wall. I did get a GigaPoint ONT installed and have a DHCP ipaddress provided instead of a static. I am good with that for now as I have a Dynamic DNS setup for my system. I've tested my work VPN and connected successfully and also my VPN to my home. All of my wifi and network devices are very very happy consuming the newly available bandwidth. I've also tested running 3 amazon prime streams at the same time with no lag. Thanks BEC Fiber and BEC Fiber crews!

Current download speeds at best are 20.3Mbs Down and 3.4Mbs up from GVTC on an Arris Networks Cable DVR MCoA box they provide. It also only provides a NAT'd connection to my router. Am looking forward to having the GigaPoint in place to receive just straight un-encumbered internet.

Thank you @Jonathan Copeland for the updates. Please let us know when the install is completed, as well as speed tests. My situation is similar to yours, as my current setup is all cat6 cables through a Cisco gigabit router, so I should be able to just connect the router to the Calix box and be up and running.

Today the fiber installers put in th outside box and brought over the overhead lines to my meter pole and from my meter underground through existing empty conduit to the house. They outside box is called a NIB and I am on PON1 from what I understand. Now it is just a wait until a call for inside installation. Will keep everyone updated as this moves through.

@Jonathan Copeland - thank you for the update! I too am already using the CAT 6e in my house that currently goes to the Rise Broadband router. The BEC install should be very easy since it will be overhead from the pole. Has anyone had their service connected yet? If so, please give us all an update. BEC indicated that they have only one crew, hopefully, they are addressing this since one crew can only average 3 to 4 connections at best per day.

@Matthew Pica I have prewired my home for the inside installation. All you need is to know where you want the Calix GigaCenter to "live" and have a power outlet there. If you are providing your own firewall and wifi you can go with the GigaPoint device and just get an Ethernet handoff. I have run CAT6E wiring and put a small patch panel in the location where I want the GigaPoint to live and will be running this back to my firewall and wifi setup (Ubiquiti EdgeMax router and Ubiquiti UniFi Wifi solutions). This allows me to have my multiple access points and various SSIDs for different networks in my house and property. Of course I am very much a techno-geek and have the skills to do this and I also did it before it got too hot. I was visited by one of the outside installers on Monday to locate my outside box but he was surprised that they had not completed the installation from the BEC poles to my meter and put in a splice box on their pole. I still need them to come and run it from their BEC poles to my meter pole and through the buried conduit I have in place for them. I even have in place jet line to do this and jet line from the outside of my house to the inside location where the Gigapoint will go. I am over in the Ranger Creek subdivision and haven't been seeing very many trucks with the BEC Fiber logo on them for a while. It was like a busy bee hive around here for a couple of weeks and now nothing. I will likely be one of the ones who will deeply test what is setup. I am initially only going with the 100Mbs connection but may upgrade to 1Gbs if I see the need later due to bandwidth usage. Right now the jump up from 20Mbs down/3.5 Mbs up will be a huge increase.

@ Matthew Pica - We will be starting some activity in Pipe Creek this year. I cannot give you an estimated date at this point in time though. I know it is very frustrating for everyone to wait for the fiber to arrive but we will be building as fast as we can. As far as the inside installation it will be a fiber cable all the way into the home so it is beyond the ability of most homeowners. However, we will take the fiber into the home wherever you would like. We will do an analysis of the home when we get there and determine the best location for our unit to provide the best service to your home. Thank You!

@Allen Marshall. I currently live in the Mustang Crossing subdivision off English crossing road in Pipe Creek. I read that you are going to the population dense areas first and that you are tentatively starting in Pipe Creek in September. Is this area one that you are planning to come into and when would be a reasonable time that I might be able to expect to be connected, no hard date just a best guess. Also I have heard connection is to the closest room to the NID. Is it possible for me to pre-wire the inside so that I can have the connection come in where so want instead? If so what wire and specifications do I need to follow to ensure connectivity?

At the first town hall meeting on fiber we were told that we would need to purchase the "modem" which was over $100 or paid out over time added to the monthly bill. I now see that the installation cost is $99 plus any extra needed based on the distance to the hub. Does the $99 installation cost include the modem? If I want 100Mbps and if I am close to the hub, will the total cost to me be $99 plus $69.99/month (probably plus tax)?

Mr. Marshall, now I am really confused and somewhat concerned. BEC originally clearly stated that Medina Lake Area INCUDLED: ALL of Bear Spring Ranch (including CPS customers in Bear Springs Ranch), Ranchland Oaks, Summit Ridge (BEC was clearly aware of their build cycle) and Dancing Bear. So has this changed? Also with respect to the "new building" is that being placed at the substation (i.e. like a Google Fiber Hut)?

Bandera Electric Broadband Pilot - Emily Monroy

@ Allen Marshall - Summit Ridge is directly behind my neighborhood, which is Ranchland Oaks. Since we are on the Medina Lake substation, I had earlier assumed that as the Medina Lake area is taken on, those of us connected to that substation would fall into place as you work through the members of the area. Is that an incorrect assumption? Is there some roadblock we need to consider once the substation is upgraded to handle the Fiber?

Hi everyone. I'm Allen Marshall, the new fiber design coordinator for BEC Fiber. Sorry some questions have gone unanswered, but we have been very short staffed with all that is going on. I hope to be available to answer questions on here from now on. @Daniel Shelton - We have installed 50 customers as of this morning and are gaining every day . We are only running one installation crew at this time, but we are very happy with their work. Everything has been running great! @Daniel Burney - You are correct. If your drop length is withing the $600 credit, the only fee for installation will be the $99. @John Goode - We are looking very closely at Flying L for installations starting this year, it will be contingent on the number of contracts we will be able to get tied down before we start construction.

I read below that Bandera businesses may start installation in July because of existing fiber. I think there is also fiber to the flying-L subdivision to support the abandoned wireless trial. Is it possible that the Flying-L homes might be included in the first Bandera installations? Cable providers anly support about 1/2 of the subdivision, and AT&T "Uverse" varies from 3Mbps to less than 1Mbps depending on location in the ranch.

you state that "BEC Fiber will provide each member a $600 credit that will be applied towards their installation costs. This will cover the average overhead installation, but distance to home and other variables may increase costs". to the layman, this sounds like unless theres extra distance from the pole to the home, then other than the $99, there shouldnt be any other install fees. correct?

@Perry Allen I signed the installation document sent over by BEC Fiber. It has a $99.00 installation fee for doing the inside work and the check box for which level of speed you want. There is also a check box for getting a static IP address for the fee of 15.00 per month. I am going to use a Dynamic DNS service instead of the static IP for my network. I am in the Boerne Pilot area in the Ranger Creek Subdivision. I was told that the outside portion in the next two weeks. The lines are up on my poles and have been lashed but not terminated. Then I would be contacted by the contractor doing the inside installation. Hope that helps on providing some updates and answers.

My neighbor and I attended the recent annual meeting held by BEC as we understood there would be a Q&A period after the meeting. We figured this would be a good time to hear updates/concerns regarding the status of not only Boerne, but the possible start dates for other zones. Much to our dismay there was no organized Q&A after the meeting, just small groups of people talking with each other. We did manage to grab a BEC staff member who appeared to have good knowledge of the status of the project. He told us that Bandera zone was scheduled to start in July. When we asked why Bandera first, he indicated it would be mainly Bandera business locations and this had to do with existing fiber in place. He said next would be Pipe Creek, and the schedule start time was in September. Lastly would be the Medina Lake zone and schedule start date on that zone would be December. Of course all of this is the "plan" and I'm guessing weather and other unforeseen issues could change these proposed times. Could someone from BEC respond to say if this staff member was accurate in his statements. Thank you...

I missed a comment made earlier by BEC on May 10th, where they indicated that the Medina Lake Area is very close to the 50% mark at 40%, so that seems to answer questions on the 16th and 19th about how the percentages are calculated. The most recent BEC comment indicates that they've decided to move to the planning stages in the Bandera, Medina Lake, and Pipe Creek areas, so these general areas are more or less a "Go", if I understand this correctly. One thing that I like about the Hill Country, is that the pace is slow. I hear deadlines and promises, and mentally add a few months to the timeline, and that works out about right. For an unfamiliar new venture like this is for BEC, I anticipate that there will be snags and delays. Hopefully the Boerne Pilot area will help provide some valuable lessons for the other areas. Some of these lessons may be proprietary, since there are other broadband providers working in some areas of the Hill Country, so BEC may not divulge everything publicly.

Right now, the Bandera, Pipe Creek, Lakehills and Medina Lake zones are in the planning and development stages. @Perry Allen I just spoke with Shane and he said that they will be offering Static IP and also bridged fiber to Ethernet (aka non-NAT'ted) IP using the Calix GigaCenter 803 PON device. The issue on static IP is the cost of IPv4 addresses are high and they have not determined pricing yet to BEC customers. I suggested that they offer a Dynamic DNS service + DHCP IPv4 and static IPv6 address to those that want it. This should be feasible for most businesses and even technically advanced end users.

I've seen them running the support wire on poles in the Ranger Creek subdivision. I plan on asking questions tomorrow at the meeting in Bandera. Anyone have some questions they want to ask? I will look here while I am there. @Perry Allen I am also interested in the static IP address question and also if they will provide transparent bridging if asked for it. I would rather have that instead of a NAT'ted connection. It makes it easier for me to setup my VPN connection on my firewall for inbound access. I understood that next week they might actually be running the branch lines down the streets and then to the outside of the house. At that point I would hope inside installlation would be pretty quick.

1. What is the status of the Boerne project? 2. You indicated about three months ago that static IP addresses will be available. Has this been finally been decided and if so what price? 3. Medina Lake is over 40% and growing. Seeing this is the largest group even at 40% (based upon your chart), is BEC starting to plan or will this wait until 50% is reached. It is difficult getting people signed up without some type of project schedule. 4. Pike Creek is at 49% and I assume will be at 50% within days; has this been sent to the board? If so is what is the project schedule?

I am confused about something and would like clarification. On the comment below by BEC Fiber 2 as a reply to John Butler, it was stated that the area has to get to 50% and Medina lake is very close at 40%. On one of the updates posted not too long ago, it said that the goal was actually the 50% marker. Going by that update, wouldn't that mean Medina lake is only realistically at 20% (40% of 50%)? I am in Pipe Creek and we are at 49%, does that mean 1 more % and we hit our mark, or will we only be at 25%?

BEC Fiber, We live in Steel Valley and we're so excited about the fiber project. I just wanted to say GVTC is coming in here now which I know you are aware of. Being in sales myself, I see GVTC getting a good percentage of residents here due to aggressive selling (door knockers, personal contact, mailings) of their platform and competitive pricing. Secondly, they seem to have a plan to get to the meter poles much faster than BEC. Just this morning they've run drops to 8 houses. Meanwhile the BEC contractors are busy in the next subdivision burying fiber. I foresee GVTC being operational within 1-2 weeks. I'm a huge supporter of the BEC project so I wanted to make you aware of how this is going where we live. Silly question. The Pipe Creek Zone is almost at 50% which means (I assume) you have to come down Hwy 16 from Bandera to run the fiber. Bandera River Ranch is approximately the same distance from Pipe Creek as it is from Bandera. Why not combine Bandera River Ranch with Pipe Creek? That would push Pipe Creek well past the 50% threshold. Full disclosure, I live in Bandera River Ranch. I figure it can't hurt to ask.

@John MacLean You can always buy some CAT5e or CAT6e cable at HomeDepot or down at Altex in San Antonio. It's not too expensive depending on length of cable. Termination isn't too hard and there are tons of instructional videos on youtube on how to terminate the cables into RJ-45 connectors either in a wall jack style or the typical cable ends you see. Look for CAT5e T-568A or T-568B wiring diagrams and pick one or the other. There is no real difference just that both ends of the cable must be wired the exact same way. A crimping tool will run $40-50 and if you need a punch down tool you can get and inexpensive one for under $20. I've used the fact that BEC Fiber is coming in to do a rework of my home network so that some of my "noisier" equipment is now in a closet where I can close the door and not be bothered with the noise or lights.

@John MacLean I was told by the initial survey folks that it would come in to house at the point closest to the last pole to the house. In my case that is the meter pole and will come into the garage. fortunately I have a power outlet available there and know how to run my own CAT6e wiring in the attic. I will be running a couple of CAT6e cables from where the installers bring it to a closet in my office where I have my firewall and other network gear. I am mostly interested in the type of Calix box they will be installing and if the system will provide me with what is commonly called an Ethernet Bridge. This way I can setup all of my own security on my firewall and not be hampered by anything on the Calix box or have to jump through hoops to make certain applications work properly. I am currently using GVTC and they provide me with a NAT connection and this is truly a pain. I know it's easier on them but not on me. This is one of the reasons I am jumping ship. Along with the higher connection speeds at the same price...

Bandera Zone - Bandera city has too many established internet service providers in which home owners and businesses may not want to change to BEC Fiber. This will be difficult for the Bandera Zone percentage to increase since the city has a higher population with internet than the rural areas included in the Bandera Zone. I work from home with Sprint being my internet carrier. I would love to get the 1 Gb service but I feel Bandera Zone wont get there if the Bandera city is included. I hope Fiber comes sooner than later.

So here is technical question around the Calix GigaCenter FTTH devices that are going to be installed as part of the GPON for Bander Fiber. Do the home devices/ONT allow for full bridging mode and let me turn off the wifi and NAT/firewall? If they don't currently you need to consider how to do this. I have a much higher end wifi solution for my property (UniFi wireless) and a much higher grade firewall system. If you only allow for NAT this will reduce the functionality I provide myself with and then you will be "on the hook" for providing security and patch management to my network. This in turn translates to higher liability if there is a security breach. Just my $2.00 worth as a CISSP and former CEH and all around IT professional.

Some people might ask why they would need BEC Fiber if they only use the internet to check their email, or are absent from the property for most of the year. Most other broadband services, if even available, offer very limited upload speeds. This may be fine if one only wants to watch NetFlix, or something like this. However, BEC Fiber will allow upload speeds that are just as fast as the download speeds. This will open the door to those who want to monitor their properties remotely with high definition cameras. Such cameras can allow one to see what's happening on the property on a smartphone or some other remote computer. While very useful, such systems require fast upload speeds, which is something that BEC Fiber could provide.

Once hookups begin north of Boerne, and customers begin reporting their results, I think interest will pick up in the other areas more quickly. The more updates from BEC as the pilot area nears completion, the better, I think. The start of the summer will probably see an uptick in interest as well, as people start dusting the cobwebs from their cabins, and checking their mail boxes. I didn’t move out here for the internet, haha, but would be happy to see it show up on the Lake within a year or so. Are there any differences in the hardware or installation for 50Mbps vs 1Gbps, or is it just an arbitrary speed cap set at the central office? In other words, if one wanted to upgrade speed later, would that be a quick phone call, or would it require different hardware, and an upgraded line to the property? Just curious.

Good Morning John, We have a very small part of Boerne separated out as our first pilot area. This was in response to an enthusiastic grassroots effort by one member. Because of his neighborhood mobilization, we had a number of people sign up for the service and the board of directors voted to go forward with the pilot. Since the project has grown and we are seeing interest across our service territory, we are encouraging the same grassroots effort among our members. Please, encourage all of your neighbors to sign up on this site. As a zone (the zones outside of the pilot are larger and centered around population areas for the time being) grows and meets the 50% target, we will be able to present to the board to begin build out. For updates, make sure to keep checking this site. If you'd like more information about how the effort started in Boerne and why we are installing there, you can find the update at https://joinbec.banderaelectric.com/#Updates

The Bandera area is large, but it contains several high home density subdivisions like the Flying-L. It seems like if you would divide Boerne up and install fiber in a very small part of the larger Boerne area you would consider doing the same thing for high density areas like the Flying-L. We are just 1 mile from downtown Bandera!

Please consider activating the already partially installed wireless system at the Flying-L as a temporary solution before fiber is available. I know everyone wants fiber ASAP, but many residents of the Flying-L would be very happy with 25Mbps (or even 10Mbps). I tried to pay $70/month for long range wireless (2 miles away), but installation was not possible due to trees and hills. There is no overhead access to the homes on my street (surrounded by golf course fairways), so cable internet is not possible (power and phone are underground to us).

@Jonathan Copeland: My mistake upon further research I found this link here for an install guide to the Gigacenter. https://www.dslreports.com/r0/download/2239617~6d841a29caadcc5ad26f86ba69d0061d/844-854_GigaCenter_Install_Guide.pdf This shows the fiber connection to it as SC-APC (angled tip instead of UPS which is flat is only difference I've found). Looking back I misunderstood your question and yes it looks like only copper from the Gigacenter to your equipment. The way i'm reading this, transparent bridging may be possible..From what I can tell in this guide (unless I missed something), it appears that if no ports are provisioned for residential gateway mode and it will be in transparent bridge mode. But without a configuration guide hard to say for sure. https://www.calix.com/content/calix/en/site-prod/library-html/systems-products/prem/op/p-gw-op/ae/800-spg/index.htm?toc71904237.htm?78691.htm Now if Pipe Creek can just hit 50%

@Matthew Pica thanks for the follow up. I looked at some of the PON networking and it will have to go through the GigaCenter to setup the timing and handshakes. Looks like I will be limited to Ethernet copper to my firewall. Am still hoping the GigaCenter will allow for transparent bridging and not act as a NAT firewall in front of my firewall. I hate having to deal with double NAT situations for my VPN tunnels.

Jonathan, per the meeting they had at Lakehills the $600 is from the pole to your house. The Gigacenter is a $200 charge that you either can pay up front or have added to your monthly bill. The fiber runs directly into the back of the gigacenter. I do not believe there is an SFP port on the gigacenter rather a built in LC connector from what I can tell. From what i've been told it's a Passive Optical Network connection if you'd like to check that out. Thanks,

Since I have seen the backbone installers working just north of John's Rd and IH10 I was wondering if the Ranger Creek Subdivision will be early on the install schedule during April? When will we start to get dates for installation? Also Is the $600.00 installation credit for the wiring into the home or onto the property? Does it include the equipment? What type of Calix GigaCenter will be installed? Will we be able to do transparent bridging to a router/firewall and will static IP addresses be available? Is the handoff from the Calix system copper Ethernet or is there an SFP/SFP+ fiber out port on the Calix CPE device? Samuel Blackshear, thank you for your questions. BEC Fiber will provide symmetrical connection to customers with no speed throttling. Installation costs will vary depending on each member's needs such as overhead versus underground installation. BEC Fiber will provide each member a $600 credit that will be applied towards their installation costs. This will cover the average overhead installation, but distance to home and other variables may increase costs.

I realize that some of these questions might be premature, but here they are: 1. Is the service speed going to be symmetric or asymmetric? I didn't see that mentioned anywhere. 2. Roughly how much do you think installation will be? I like to budget for things in advance, the earlier the better, especially if we're talking about a few $k. 3. Mr. Leard, I'm sorry for the change in the zones. We are actually seeing that we can expand the project, and that has caused the change. To clarify, we did add new zones, but we did not change the original Medina Lake, Pipe Creek, Bandera or Boerne Pilot zone boundaries. What may have changed are the number of meters that we can build internet to. We are learning as we go and are finding that we can offer better/faster service to more people. Just saw your new name, new logo, and revised zones and I'm not a happy (potential) customer. I have a great deal of sympathy for the "Giving Up" comment below. It is difficult to reach a goal when you keep changing the rules, the size of the field and the distance to the goal line. I was once very excited about the opportunity for faster, more reliable internet services from Bandera Electric but at this point that excitement has been replaced with frustration. A couple of days ago our area was closing in on 30% and now it shows 20% . It appears you re-drew the boundary lines of the zones increasing the numbers for some while decreasing it for others. Whatever the reason for the change, the result appears to be unfair for those who had their numbers reduced. I can't speak for any of your other customers but right now I feel like Charlie Brown trying to kick a field goal with Lucy (Bandera Electirc) as the holder.

Bandera Electric Broadband Pilot - Giving Up

4:05pm January 6, 2017

Giving Up

I signed up as one of the first 800 people interested in getting broadband internet access as the program initially stated BEC is bringing broadband internet to rural Bandera county. The Broadband project appears to be a moving target and has transformed at least twice already and the word rural is not even mentioned as it is a pure fiber solution with only two speed options which are still good deals for the price. I personally have installed and terminated miles of fiber cable and it will require some effort to keep it all up and running as there are limitations and environmental factors that you will need to worry about. For me BEC Broadband internet is unachievable as what is left in my District 2. My District 2 has been split into multiple zones of which the most populated areas downtown Bandera, Medina Lake subdivision and parts of Pipe Creek subdivision have been selectively removed from District 2. What is left is this tiny little sliver of SH 173 where I live of course. I was informed today that there is not enough interest in my district for BEC to consider doing anything at this time. For what is left of district 2 after it has been surgically diced up is mainly vast areas of open land owned by just a handful of people. A few homes where some owners only come in for very short stays and leave again. When I check my record on the Crowdfiber site it indicated that "no goal is required". I immediately thought this was a good sign and emailed BEC asking when I could expect to get the fiber internet installed if no goal was required. I received an email translation of what "no goal is required" means. The translation of the statement means "no hope in Hades you will ever see broadband internet to your home in your lifetime". Of course I was encouraged to get my neighbors interested and signed up but I did not want to drive to Houston and Dallas to do that plus some of my neighbors don't know what email is. Explaining that is a whole other issue. With all of this I decided I would just withdraw from the program as not to keep getting my hopes up that something as common place as internet will ever make it out as far as 6 miles from downtown Bandera TX. I did get a chuckle as I went to this Crowdfiber web site signed on to cancel my interest so I hit the cancel button and immediately an error message pops up "Oh no something went wrong an engineer has been notified". The only thing that went wrong is the powers to be did not have good information when they announced Broadband Internet is coming to Bandera County and now they are trying to get the most populated areas signed up to recoup what has already been spent or obligations to carriers for access are covered. I will give BEC credit they never mentioned a year to expect Broadband Internet. I recommend BEC stick to the watts and leave the bits and bytes to the experts. A Megawatt is not the same as a Megabyte. Very disappointing.
