Boerne Construction Update

8:29am April 10, 2017

Boerne construction is now 40 percent complete. We will begin turning up subscribers in late April! Thank you for your continued patience and excitement.

What's in a Number?

11:11am April 4, 2017

For those of you who want to know how zones were created and how we calculate the percentage to goal, this update is for you!

The zones are not based off of zip codes, but rather population density in relation to the existing BEC electric poles and infrastructure. The goal for a particular zone is 50 percent of active residential and commercial meters. This excludes meters for gates, barns, wells, etc. The following graph depicts actual backers for each zone, the goal for that zone and the calculated percentage.

The pilot project is 20-percent complete!

10:50am March 20, 2017

Contractors will begin installing backbone fiber this week. (Backbone is a larger transmission line that carries data gathered from smaller lines that interconnect with it.) Member installations are expected to begin in late April.

Construction in Progress!

1:09pm March 1, 2017

Construction in Progress

BEC Fiber reached a major milestone when construction began in Boerne on February 23, 2017. Like much of our service territory, this area is currently without any high-speed internet options. However, these members took matters into their own hands, banded together and pushed the initiative in North Boerne.

Will your community be next?

2:38pm February 27, 2017

To help raise awareness we wanted to let you know how you can help. We appreciate our members support, patience and questions while we work to launch BEC Fiber service.

  • Login to your joinbec.banderaelectric.com and send postcards to all those in your area for FREE, we cover everything!
  • Let others in your area know that all homes and businesses can preregister NOW. They do not have to wait until a goal is set. Interest levels from preregistration will guide our construction process. Your community could be next when enough people preregister.
  • Follow us on Facebook, like and share all of our posts.
  • Let us know what questions you have or have heard in the community by posting comments on our BEC Fiber comment page or give us a call at 866.226.3372.

Why Boerne? Don't they already have high-speed internet?

8:52pm February 1, 2017

Many have asked why BEC's first fiber pilot is being built and tested in North Boerne.  This is an interesting story. There is an area north of Boerne, on the way to Sisterdale that is in a "dead zone" for any type of high-speed internet. The people who live in this area are BEC members, and have satellite internet and cell phone data as their only internet options -- not unlike many other BEC neighborhoods.  A year ago, BEC was not aware of the internet issues in this area. However, one frustrated BEC member and his neighbors took it upon themselves to "rally the troops" to bring high-speed internet to their homes.

It all started with a free online petition and neighborhood website, door to door canvasing by volunteers and many emails to BEC.  This neighborhood's grass roots efforts caught our attention.  BEC called a town hall meeting last summer and the room was packed with these neighbors asking that we listen to their needs and help them to bridge the "digital divide," improving their quality of life.

We asked them to get 50% of their neighborhood, and the surrounding neighborhood to sign up, and we promised take the proposal to the BEC board of directors for consideration of a pilot project.  This group of grassroots advocates did just that. Within weeks, the Boerne pilot was approved and the BEC Fiber (formerly BEC Broadband) staff hit the ground running!

Since then, the interest from other neighborhoods in the BEC service territory has grown exponentially, and BEC introduced this site to help members manage the interest.  Just as we did 78 years ago when BEC brought electricity to the area, we are working to bring you high-speed internet.  But, just like 78 years ago, it takes time to develop and build the infrastructure.  We see the interest keeps growing and we need our member-owners to help us keep the momentum going forward.

This is where you come in. Please, attend the town hall meetings, come to the Annual Meeting (Sat, May 20), sign up on this site, talk to your friends and neighbors and please help to spread the word! This is your cooperative and we are here to provide you reliable service and improve your quality of life the best we can.

We have a new look and the fiber is here!

4:06pm January 30, 2017

BEC Broadband has changed our name to BEC Fiber and our logo to better reflect our "fiber to the home" initiative.

And guess what else?

The fiber has arrived!

Construction in North Boerne is about to begin.  like much of our rural service territory, this area is currently without any high-speed internet options. However, these members took matters into their own hands, banded together, got the required signatures and pushed the initiative in North Boerne.

We are happy to be able to bring high-speed internet to our members in this area.

Not in an active zone?  Never fear, we are adding new zones soon.  Feel free to sign up now, and the zones will capture your information if you fit into it.

Thank you for supporting this grassroots movement of our member-owners.  Please continue to monitor this page for updates!

Things are moving along in Boerne pilot area!

3:42pm January 23, 2017

BEC is completing the planning stage of our pilot at this time. You may receive a call, letter, or visit from a BEC contractor regarding access to an easement on your property. Should you have any questions regarding this, please call 866-226-3372.

With completion of phase 1, we expect to begin construction in Boerne in mid to late February, with home installation following completion of our network construction.

At this time, we are still finalizing all plans.  There have been no BEC broadband internet home installations yet, but we will contact you when we are ready to install. If you sent in paperwork from a town hall meeting or have signed up on CrowdFiber, we have your information and will contact you as soon as it is available in your neighborhood.

Please, continue to monitor our progress on this page.

Bandera Wireless Pilot Update

8:50am December 9, 2016

BEC has decided to discontinue the pilot program. It is always BEC’s primary mission to provide value added services to our members at a reasonable cost and through responsible business practices. During the design and construction of the pilot wireless network, the equipment did not perform as we had hoped, nor was it readily available.

Instead, we have decided to continue with a “fiber to the home” broadband project. We are asking that all members interested in broadband fiber internet sign up here on CrowdFiber. If you were a member on the Bandera wireless pilot, your name has already been added to CrowdFiber. However, it is recommended that you create an account as this is the best place to get updates on the project. As a zone reaches 50 percent member interest, BEC will begin planning and design.

BEC Free Wi-Fi will still be available in Bandera on Main Street and at the Mansfield and Bandera City parks for public use.  Thank you for your continued patience.

Boerne Broadband Update

10:02am December 1, 2016

The Boerne broadband project is slated to begin construction in late January 2017.  We will keep you updated through email and social media as we have more information about the project. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us at PublicRelations@banderaelectric.com.

Just had the guys checking the outside design/poles for BEC Fiber on my property here in Ranger Creek. Looks like at least my section is going to have the fiber start to be run tomorrow through Friday. This includes the outside installation to the edge of the house. Any idea on how long from that point it will take to have the inside installation completed?

@Perry Allen I just spoke with Shane and he said that they will be offering Static IP and also bridged fiber to Ethernet (aka non-NAT'ted) IP using the Calix GigaCenter 803 PON device. The issue on static IP is the cost of IPv4 addresses are high and they have not determined pricing yet to BEC customers. I suggested that they offer a Dynamic DNS service + DHCP IPv4 and static IPv6 address to those that want it. This should be feasible for most businesses and even technically advanced end users.

I've seen them running the support wire on poles in the Ranger Creek subdivision. I plan on asking questions tomorrow at the meeting in Bandera. Anyone have some questions they want to ask? I will look here while I am there. @Perry Allen I am also interested in the static IP address question and also if they will provide transparent bridging if asked for it. I would rather have that instead of a NAT'ted connection. It makes it easier for me to setup my VPN connection on my firewall for inbound access. I understood that next week they might actually be running the branch lines down the streets and then to the outside of the house. At that point I would hope inside installlation would be pretty quick.

I had always assumed that the percentages reflected interest vs total number of meters, but maybe there has been some misunderstanding. I do hope that this will get explained a bit more clearly. I figure that things are slow to complete in Boerne, as these types of things usually are. I'm sure that once the first people get hooked up, they'll come here to talk about it.

1. What is the status of the Boerne project? 2. You indicated about three months ago that static IP addresses will be available. Has this been finally been decided and if so what price? 3. Medina Lake is over 40% and growing. Seeing this is the largest group even at 40% (based upon your chart), is BEC starting to plan or will this wait until 50% is reached. It is difficult getting people signed up without some type of project schedule. 4. Pike Creek is at 49% and I assume will be at 50% within days; has this been sent to the board? If so is what is the project schedule?

I too thought I heard what Emily heard. I was wanting to go to the meeting on Saturday and hope someone will be there who can answer that question. It appears there is some confusion.

BEC Fiber - At the Lakehills town hall meeting, there were comments from the presenters that the Medina Lake area DID NOT need to be at 50% (because of population density) to be approved to move forward. But i'm seeing comments below that we still have a ways to go to get to 50%. Which is it?

Bandera Electric Broadband Pilot - Matthew Pica

7:05am May 16, 2017

Matthew Pica

I am confused about something and would like clarification. On the comment below by BEC Fiber 2 as a reply to John Butler, it was stated that the area has to get to 50% and Medina lake is very close at 40%. On one of the updates posted not too long ago, it said that the goal was actually the 50% marker. Going by that update, wouldn't that mean Medina lake is only realistically at 20% (40% of 50%)? I am in Pipe Creek and we are at 49%, does that mean 1 more % and we hit our mark, or will we only be at 25%?

BEC, I see your trucks quite a bit on Johns Rd west of I-10 preparing the pilot area. I have not seen any trucks on J Williams Rd, the first road off of Johns Rd. Could you tell me when installation will start for J Williams? We are all excited to get off of our flakey cellular hot spots and data caps. I refuse to use satellite because of their horrible latency times. The moment we get the letter in the mail from BEC that fiber is available, I will be scheduling install that same week! Thanks! -Jason

BEC Fiber, We live in Steel Valley and we're so excited about the fiber project. I just wanted to say GVTC is coming in here now which I know you are aware of. Being in sales myself, I see GVTC getting a good percentage of residents here due to aggressive selling (door knockers, personal contact, mailings) of their platform and competitive pricing. Secondly, they seem to have a plan to get to the meter poles much faster than BEC. Just this morning they've run drops to 8 houses. Meanwhile the BEC contractors are busy in the next subdivision burying fiber. I foresee GVTC being operational within 1-2 weeks. I'm a huge supporter of the BEC project so I wanted to make you aware of how this is going where we live. Not that anyone asked but imho BEC should focus all the resources they can in the areas GVTC is working. Thanks for the great service BEC always provides.

Hello William! Thank you for asking. There is no such thing as a silly question. Along 16 from Bandera is one way that the fiber could run. However, we are still in the planning phases. The zones were designed around our electric distribution system and the projects will be designed in a way to best support the electric grid. The benefit to our member of broadband service is an addded bonus!

Hi John Butler, we do not have a timeline yet. The first step is getting to 50 percent, and then we will begin the construction planning. The Medina Lake zone is very close at 40 percent.

Bandera Electric Broadband Pilot - William Rotureau

10:42am May 9, 2017

Silly question. The Pipe Creek Zone is almost at 50% which means (I assume) you have to come down Hwy 16 from Bandera to run the fiber. Bandera River Ranch is approximately the same distance from Pipe Creek as it is from Bandera. Why not combine Bandera River Ranch with Pipe Creek? That would push Pipe Creek well past the 50% threshold. Full disclosure, I live in Bandera River Ranch. I figure it can't hurt to ask.

Bandera Electric Broadband Pilot - John Butler

I live in the Medina Lake zone. My Exede contract is up and HughesNet is now my choice for internet provider...faster, less expensive for more data, but there is a 2 year commit. I'd rather wait for BEC fiber if it's coming within a year or so. What's the rough estimate for expected timeline now that we are 40% to goal with interest? JB

@Jonathan Copeland Cool - Thanks!

Bandera Electric Broadband Pilot - Jonathan Copeland

9:31am May 5, 2017

@John MacLean You can always buy some CAT5e or CAT6e cable at HomeDepot or down at Altex in San Antonio. It's not too expensive depending on length of cable. Termination isn't too hard and there are tons of instructional videos on youtube on how to terminate the cables into RJ-45 connectors either in a wall jack style or the typical cable ends you see. Look for CAT5e T-568A or T-568B wiring diagrams and pick one or the other. There is no real difference just that both ends of the cable must be wired the exact same way. A crimping tool will run $40-50 and if you need a punch down tool you can get and inexpensive one for under $20. I've used the fact that BEC Fiber is coming in to do a rework of my home network so that some of my "noisier" equipment is now in a closet where I can close the door and not be bothered with the noise or lights.

@John MacLean I was told by the initial survey folks that it would come in to house at the point closest to the last pole to the house. In my case that is the meter pole and will come into the garage. fortunately I have a power outlet available there and know how to run my own CAT6e wiring in the attic. I will be running a couple of CAT6e cables from where the installers bring it to a closet in my office where I have my firewall and other network gear. I am mostly interested in the type of Calix box they will be installing and if the system will provide me with what is commonly called an Ethernet Bridge. This way I can setup all of my own security on my firewall and not be hampered by anything on the Calix box or have to jump through hoops to make certain applications work properly. I am currently using GVTC and they provide me with a NAT connection and this is truly a pain. I know it's easier on them but not on me. This is one of the reasons I am jumping ship. Along with the higher connection speeds at the same price...

Bandera Electric Broadband Pilot - John MacLean

11:29am May 4, 2017

@Jonathan Copeland I am wondering where the connection will come into the house. Now I have the cable modem in the bedroom where the cable comes through the wall. I pretty much have to have it that way because I don't want my connection to the main computer to be wireless. I have never used fiber before.

@John MacLean I saw them in both the 2nd and 3rd. And they said they were doing the final build out before stringing onto the poles on my property. Hi Isidoro, I understand you're concerned, but the Bandera zone is making progress despite the competition. BEC Fiber is offering a superior technology, higher speeds with no throttling of bandwidth and great prices. It's hard to compete with that!

Bandera Electric Broadband Pilot - ISIDORO GARCIA

Bandera Zone - Bandera city has too many established internet service providers in which home owners and businesses may not want to change to BEC Fiber. This will be difficult for the Bandera Zone percentage to increase since the city has a higher population with internet than the rural areas included in the Bandera Zone. I work from home with Sprint being my internet carrier. I would love to get the 1 Gb service but I feel Bandera Zone wont get there if the Bandera city is included. I hope Fiber comes sooner than later.

So here is technical question around the Calix GigaCenter FTTH devices that are going to be installed as part of the GPON for Bander Fiber. Do the home devices/ONT allow for full bridging mode and let me turn off the wifi and NAT/firewall? If they don't currently you need to consider how to do this. I have a much higher end wifi solution for my property (UniFi wireless) and a much higher grade firewall system. If you only allow for NAT this will reduce the functionality I provide myself with and then you will be "on the hook" for providing security and patch management to my network. This in turn translates to higher liability if there is a security breach. Just my $2.00 worth as a CISSP and former CEH and all around IT professional.

Just an FYI. All the post cards I selected from the list this month came back to me with a "No such address" sticker placed over the street address by the Post Office. I don't remember where I requested them to be mailed but they were all in Bandera River Ranch with addresses on Oak Bend and Jack Rabbit. Still holding out hope fiber will come some day. Thanks for the effort.

Some people might ask why they would need BEC Fiber if they only use the internet to check their email, or are absent from the property for most of the year. Most other broadband services, if even available, offer very limited upload speeds. This may be fine if one only wants to watch NetFlix, or something like this. However, BEC Fiber will allow upload speeds that are just as fast as the download speeds. This will open the door to those who want to monitor their properties remotely with high definition cameras. Such cameras can allow one to see what's happening on the property on a smartphone or some other remote computer. While very useful, such systems require fast upload speeds, which is something that BEC Fiber could provide.

Thanks for giving me the option to mail cards to folks living in Bandera River Ranch. I can't go door to door due to health issues so hopefully the cards will prompt others in the neighborhood to sign up. With the Bandera area still needing 1300+ to sign up to reach 50%, I may not be a around to see fiber installed but I will keep trying to get the world out. Thanks again for the effort.

Once hookups begin north of Boerne, and customers begin reporting their results, I think interest will pick up in the other areas more quickly. The more updates from BEC as the pilot area nears completion, the better, I think. The start of the summer will probably see an uptick in interest as well, as people start dusting the cobwebs from their cabins, and checking their mail boxes. I didn’t move out here for the internet, haha, but would be happy to see it show up on the Lake within a year or so. Are there any differences in the hardware or installation for 50Mbps vs 1Gbps, or is it just an arbitrary speed cap set at the central office? In other words, if one wanted to upgrade speed later, would that be a quick phone call, or would it require different hardware, and an upgraded line to the property? Just curious.

Good Morning John, We have a very small part of Boerne separated out as our first pilot area. This was in response to an enthusiastic grassroots effort by one member. Because of his neighborhood mobilization, we had a number of people sign up for the service and the board of directors voted to go forward with the pilot. Since the project has grown and we are seeing interest across our service territory, we are encouraging the same grassroots effort among our members. Please, encourage all of your neighbors to sign up on this site. As a zone (the zones outside of the pilot are larger and centered around population areas for the time being) grows and meets the 50% target, we will be able to present to the board to begin build out. For updates, make sure to keep checking this site. If you'd like more information about how the effort started in Boerne and why we are installing there, you can find the update at https://joinbec.banderaelectric.com/#Updates

The Bandera area is large, but it contains several high home density subdivisions like the Flying-L. It seems like if you would divide Boerne up and install fiber in a very small part of the larger Boerne area you would consider doing the same thing for high density areas like the Flying-L. We are just 1 mile from downtown Bandera!

Please consider activating the already partially installed wireless system at the Flying-L as a temporary solution before fiber is available. I know everyone wants fiber ASAP, but many residents of the Flying-L would be very happy with 25Mbps (or even 10Mbps). I tried to pay $70/month for long range wireless (2 miles away), but installation was not possible due to trees and hills. There is no overhead access to the homes on my street (surrounded by golf course fairways), so cable internet is not possible (power and phone are underground to us).

@Jonathan Copeland: My mistake upon further research I found this link here for an install guide to the Gigacenter. https://www.dslreports.com/r0/download/2239617~6d841a29caadcc5ad26f86ba69d0061d/844-854_GigaCenter_Install_Guide.pdf This shows the fiber connection to it as SC-APC (angled tip instead of UPS which is flat is only difference I've found). Looking back I misunderstood your question and yes it looks like only copper from the Gigacenter to your equipment. The way i'm reading this, transparent bridging may be possible..From what I can tell in this guide (unless I missed something), it appears that if no ports are provisioned for residential gateway mode and it will be in transparent bridge mode. But without a configuration guide hard to say for sure. https://www.calix.com/content/calix/en/site-prod/library-html/systems-products/prem/op/p-gw-op/ae/800-spg/index.htm?toc71904237.htm?78691.htm Now if Pipe Creek can just hit 50%

@Matthew Pica thanks for the follow up. I looked at some of the PON networking and it will have to go through the GigaCenter to setup the timing and handshakes. Looks like I will be limited to Ethernet copper to my firewall. Am still hoping the GigaCenter will allow for transparent bridging and not act as a NAT firewall in front of my firewall. I hate having to deal with double NAT situations for my VPN tunnels.

Jonathan, per the meeting they had at Lakehills the $600 is from the pole to your house. The Gigacenter is a $200 charge that you either can pay up front or have added to your monthly bill. The fiber runs directly into the back of the gigacenter. I do not believe there is an SFP port on the gigacenter rather a built in LC connector from what I can tell. From what i've been told it's a Passive Optical Network connection if you'd like to check that out. Thanks,

Since I have seen the backbone installers working just north of John's Rd and IH10 I was wondering if the Ranger Creek Subdivision will be early on the install schedule during April? When will we start to get dates for installation? Also Is the $600.00 installation credit for the wiring into the home or onto the property? Does it include the equipment? What type of Calix GigaCenter will be installed? Will we be able to do transparent bridging to a router/firewall and will static IP addresses be available? Is the handoff from the Calix system copper Ethernet or is there an SFP/SFP+ fiber out port on the Calix CPE device? Sorry for all the technical questions but I am reworking some of my home networking infrastructure.

Samuel Blackshear, thank you for your questions. BEC Fiber will provide symmetrical connection to customers with no speed throttling. Installation costs will vary depending on each member's needs such as overhead versus underground installation. BEC Fiber will provide each member a $600 credit that will be applied towards their installation costs. This will cover the average overhead installation, but distance to home and other variables may increase costs.

I realize that some of these questions might be premature, but here they are: 1. Is the service speed going to be symmetric or asymmetric? I didn't see that mentioned anywhere. 2. Roughly how much do you think installation will be? I like to budget for things in advance, the earlier the better, especially if we're talking about a few $k. 3. Is there any more information other than what is located here (TOS, further details, etc.)?

Mr. Leard, I'm sorry for the change in the zones. We are actually seeing that we can expand the project, and that has caused the change. To clarify, we did add new zones, but we did not change the original Medina Lake, Pipe Creek, Bandera or Boerne Pilot zone boundaries. What may have changed are the number of meters that we can build internet to. We are learning as we go and are finding that we can offer better/faster service to more people. This is a new venture for BEC and we appreciate all of our members' patience and we do understand your frustrations. Just saw your new name, new logo, and revised zones and I'm not a happy (potential) customer. I have a great deal of sympathy for the "Giving Up" comment below. It is difficult to reach a goal when you keep changing the rules, the size of the field and the distance to the goal line. I was once very excited about the opportunity for faster, more reliable internet services from Bandera Electric but at this point that excitement has been replaced with frustration. A couple of days ago our area was closing in on 30% and now it shows 20% . It appears you re-drew the boundary lines of the zones increasing the numbers for some while decreasing it for others. Whatever the reason for the change, the result appears to be unfair for those who had their numbers reduced. I can't speak for any of your other customers but right now I feel like Charlie Brown trying to kick a field goal with Lucy (Bandera Electirc) as the holder.

Bandera Electric Broadband Pilot - Giving Up

4:05pm January 6, 2017

Giving Up

I signed up as one of the first 800 people interested in getting broadband internet access as the program initially stated BEC is bringing broadband internet to rural Bandera county. The Broadband project appears to be a moving target and has transformed at least twice already and the word rural is not even mentioned as it is a pure fiber solution with only two speed options which are still good deals for the price. I personally have installed and terminated miles of fiber cable and it will require some effort to keep it all up and running as there are limitations and environmental factors that you will need to worry about. For me BEC Broadband internet is unachievable as what is left in my District 2. My District 2 has been split into multiple zones of which the most populated areas downtown Bandera, Medina Lake subdivision and parts of Pipe Creek subdivision have been selectively removed from District 2. What is left is this tiny little sliver of SH 173 where I live of course. I was informed today that there is not enough interest in my district for BEC to consider doing anything at this time. For what is left of district 2 after it has been surgically diced up is mainly vast areas of open land owned by just a handful of people. A few homes where some owners only come in for very short stays and leave again. When I check my record on the Crowdfiber site it indicated that "no goal is required". I immediately thought this was a good sign and emailed BEC asking when I could expect to get the fiber internet installed if no goal was required. I received an email translation of what "no goal is required" means. The translation of the statement means "no hope in Hades you will ever see broadband internet to your home in your lifetime". Of course I was encouraged to get my neighbors interested and signed up but I did not want to drive to Houston and Dallas to do that plus some of my neighbors don't know what email is. Explaining that is a whole other issue. With all of this I decided I would just withdraw from the program as not to keep getting my hopes up that something as common place as internet will ever make it out as far as 6 miles from downtown Bandera TX. I did get a chuckle as I went to this Crowdfiber web site signed on to cancel my interest so I hit the cancel button and immediately an error message pops up "Oh no something went wrong an engineer has been notified". The only thing that went wrong is the powers to be did not have good information when they announced Broadband Internet is coming to Bandera County and now they are trying to get the most populated areas signed up to recoup what has already been spent or obligations to carriers for access are covered. I will give BEC credit they never mentioned a year to expect Broadband Internet. I recommend BEC stick to the watts and leave the bits and bytes to the experts. A Megawatt is not the same as a Megabyte. Very disappointing.
